The Eye Health Crisis in Nigeria

Cataracts, a leading cause of preventable blindness, disproportionately affect millions of Nigerians. An estimated 5 million people in Nigeria are blind or visually impaired, with cataracts responsible for over half of these cases. Tragically, less than 10% of these individuals receive the necessary surgical treatment, leaving them needlessly sightless.

Key Challenges:

  • Limited Access to Care: 80% of visually impaired Nigerians reside in rural areas, far from specialized eye care services.
  • Shortage of Ophthalmologists: With only 700 ophthalmologists for a population of 188 million, Nigeria faces a severe shortage of eye care professionals.
  • High Prevalence of Childhood Blindness: Approximately 100,000 Nigerian children are blind, with half facing a shortened life expectancy.

The Power of Prevention

Cataract surgery is a highly effective and cost-efficient intervention. A simple 30-minute procedure can restore sight and dramatically improve quality of life. By addressing this urgent need, we can significantly reduce the burden of blindness in Nigeria and empower countless individuals.

Let’s work together to restore sight and transform lives.

Since 2010 Action Charity Trust has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals in Nigeria. Through our partnership with Geeta Ashram and Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, we’ve been instrumental in restoring vision to thousands of people. Our dedicated medical teams, using state-of-the-art techniques, perform life-changing cataract surgeries. Beyond the surgeries, we prioritize post-operative care to ensure long-lasting vision restoration. By working together, we’re empowering individuals and communities, transforming lives, one sight restored at a time.”
