The Eye Health Crisis in Nigeria
Cataracts, a leading cause of preventable blindness, disproportionately affect millions of Nigerians. An estimated 5 million people in Nigeria are blind or visually impaired, with cataracts responsible for over half of these cases. Tragically, less than 10% of these individuals receive the necessary surgical treatment, leaving them needlessly sightless.
Key Challenges:
- Limited Access to Care: 80% of visually impaired Nigerians reside in rural areas, far from specialized eye care services.
- Shortage of Ophthalmologists: With only 700 ophthalmologists for a population of 188 million, Nigeria faces a severe shortage of eye care professionals.
- High Prevalence of Childhood Blindness: Approximately 100,000 Nigerian children are blind, with half facing a shortened life expectancy.
The Power of Prevention
Cataract surgery is a highly effective and cost-efficient intervention. A simple 30-minute procedure can restore sight and dramatically improve quality of life. By addressing this urgent need, we can significantly reduce the burden of blindness in Nigeria and empower countless individuals.
